Instead of being based on sugary lemonade, it uses pure lemon juice. The sugar in this drink comes from the subtle sweetness of the tonic water and from a splash of grenadine. The sour taste of the lemon juice, the tartness of the pomegranate based grenadine, and the bitterness\u00a0of the tonic water blend together nicely to create a taste like a strong pink lemonade with a hint of sweet tart candy. The rum brings the alcohol content to the party and has a noticeable warm presence. It also serves to cut just a bit of the tartness out of the cocktail.
